Golf Simulator Projector Distance FAQ

Golf simulators require ultra-short throw (UST) projectors with throw ratios between 0.2 and 0.4. This allows the projector to sit just 1-2 feet from the impact screen, completely out of the ball flight path and swing arc.

Standard throw projectors need to be 10-15 feet from the screen, directly in the ball flight path. Golf balls travel at 100+ mph and would damage the projector. UST projectors sit below or beside the screen, safely out of the way.

UST projectors for golf simulators are typically placed on a low stand or shelf 12-24 inches from the impact screen. They project upward at an angle. Some setups use ceiling-mounted short throw projectors projecting downward, but this is less common.

Most golf simulators use 10-14 foot wide impact screens (120-170 inch diagonal). The minimum recommended width is 10 feet to capture full club swing arc. Height should be at least 8 feet to show high ball flights.

No. Golf simulators require specialized impact screens designed to absorb golf ball impacts at high speeds. Regular projection screens will tear or puncture immediately. Impact screens are made from heavy-duty woven materials.

UST projectors typically sit 12-24 inches from the impact screen depending on screen size. For a 120-inch screen, expect about 15-18 inches. For 150-inch screens, around 20-24 inches. Always check your specific projector's throw ratio specifications.

Place the UST projector on the floor or a low stand, projecting upward onto the impact screen. This keeps the light path below your swing plane. Ceiling-mounted rear projection setups eliminate shadows entirely but require more space behind the screen.

Launch monitors like Trackman, SkyTrak, and Mevo+ work with any projector. The key requirement is a UST projector with adequate brightness (2500+ lumens) and low input lag for responsive gameplay. 4K resolution enhances course graphics detail.

Short throw projectors (0.4-0.9 throw ratio) can work in some setups where the projector can be mounted to the side or ceiling. However, UST projectors are strongly preferred because they completely eliminate ball strike risk and shadow issues.

With a UST projector, room depth is determined by swing space, not projector distance. You need minimum 15 feet depth: 10 feet behind the ball for backswing plus 5 feet from ball to screen. The projector only adds 1-2 feet in front of the screen.
