What it does well
- Black levels and contrast that still embarrass most projectors near this price, which is the single thing that makes a room feel like a cinema.
- A three-chip design, so there is no rainbow effect and colour brightness equals white brightness.
- A motorised lens with memory presets, so a 2.35:1 scope screen can be switched without touching the projector.
- Wide lens shift, which makes it far easier to place in a room that was not designed around it.
Where it falls short
- It is lamp-based. The lamp dims gradually over its life and eventually needs replacing, which is both a running cost and a slow decline you stop noticing until you fit a new one.
- It is not a native 4K panel. Pixel shifting gets impressively close, but a native 4K device resolves fine detail more cleanly.
- There is no HDMI 2.1, so no 4K120 from a PS5 or Xbox Series X. For a gaming-first room this rules it out.
- It is large and heavy, and a projector this size is a two-person ceiling mount.

Owner reports are consistent and have been for years: in a properly darkened room the contrast is the thing people single out, and it is why the 5050UB kept selling long after newer models arrived. The complaints are equally consistent, and they are about the light source rather than the picture. People notice the lamp dimming only in hindsight, and the fan noise in high-brightness modes comes up often enough to be worth planning a mount position around.

The same family without the lamp. A laser light source holds its brightness and starts instantly, and it adds HDMI 2.1 with 4K120 support. It costs more and its native contrast is not dramatically better, so this is a purchase about longevity and gaming rather than picture quality.
Check price on AmazonMeaningfully less money for a very good picture, with accurate out-of-box colour. You give up the wide lens shift and lens memory, so placement is far less forgiving and a scope screen becomes awkward.

Is the Epson 5050UB still worth buying?
In a room you can darken, yes. Its contrast remains competitive with far newer projectors and the motorised lens is still unusual at the price. The two reasons to look elsewhere are gaming, because there is no HDMI 2.1 and therefore no 4K120, and lamp maintenance, because a laser model removes that job entirely.
Is the 5050UB native 4K?
No. It uses three 1080p LCD chips with a pixel-shifting processor to put more pixels on screen than the panels natively hold. The result is genuinely detailed and far beyond 1080p, but a native 4K projector resolves the finest detail more cleanly. Most viewers at normal seating distance do not find this the deciding factor.
How long does the lamp last and what does it cost?
Lamp life depends heavily on the brightness mode you run, and eco modes extend it substantially. Plan for a replacement lamp as a running cost over the life of the projector. If that prospect bothers you, a laser projector such as the LS11000 removes it, which is most of the argument for spending more.
Can I use the 5050UB for PS5 or Xbox gaming?
You can play, but at 4K it is limited to 60Hz because there is no HDMI 2.1. If 4K120 matters to you, look at the LS11000 or a dedicated gaming projector. For single-player and cinematic games at 4K60 the picture is excellent.
