TCL QM8L review

Seventy-five inches of Mini LED at a price that undercuts the established brands, and what you give up.

The verdict: The QM8L delivers Mini LED brightness at 75 inches for meaningfully less than the equivalent Samsung or LG, and for a bright room on a budget that combination is hard to argue with. Buy it if screen size and brightness per pound are what you are optimising for. Pay more for the Samsung QN90D if you are sensitive to processing artefacts and blooming, because that is consistently where the price difference between these shows up.

What it does well

Where it falls short

What owners report

Value is the overwhelming theme in owner reports: people describe getting a size and brightness of television they could not otherwise have afforded. Satisfaction is generally high among buyers who understood the trade going in.

The complaints are consistent and specific: motion handling on fast content and blooming on letterboxed films. Owners who watch mostly modern streaming content in a lit room rarely mention either. Owners watching older or lower-bitrate material notice the processing more.

Alternatives worth considering

Better Processing
Samsung 75 Inch Class Neo QLED 4K QN90D Mini LED
~$1,600

The same size and technology with more refined local dimming and noticeably better processing. Prices on both move a lot, so check them against each other before deciding, since the gap is sometimes small.

Common questions

Is TCL as good as Samsung or LG?

On the headline specifications, close. On processing, motion handling and the refinement of local dimming, generally a step behind, and that is where the price difference lives. For a bright room where brightness and size dominate the experience, the gap is smaller than the price suggests.

TCL QM8L or Samsung QN90D?

Check the current prices, because both move a great deal and the gap between them is sometimes small. At similar prices the Samsung's better processing and dimming make it the pick. When the TCL is significantly cheaper, it is a lot of television for the money.

Is Mini LED better than OLED?

Neither is better outright. Mini LED goes far brighter, which wins in a lit room. OLED switches pixels off individually for perfect blacks and no blooming, which wins in a dark one. Choose by your room rather than by the technology.

Is 75 inches right for my room?

Probably closer to right than you think, since most people undersize. Our screen size calculator takes your seating distance and gives a recommendation.
